Kirov was awarded the honorary title City of Labour Valour for the great contribution of its residents to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, uninterrupted manufacture of military and civilian products at industrial enterprises and people’s labour heroism and commitment.

Even before the war, Kirov was regarded as suitable for the development of the defence and machine-building industries. The Great Patriotic War showed that Kirov’s production potential could successfully meet diverse needs of the army and proved that, in terms of economic feasibility, the city was a good location for large industrial enterprises.

Starting the very first days of the war, the Kirov railway junction became critically important, as it was a transit point for the evacuation of people and enterprises from the western regions of the country to the east.

During the first year of the war, over 70 various plants and factories, as well as 25 institutions and organisations arrived in the city. New industrial working areas were created for them.

In the open fields and marshland areas, workers erected new workshops, which later became high-tech and modern production facilities.

Over the war years, Kirov enterprises produced more than 4,000 tanks, around 2,000 legendary Katyusha rocket launchers, three million shells, five million aerial bombs, 20 million hand grenades, 200 warships, two million mortars, over 2,5 million machine guns, aviation and other equipment, as well as 13 million pairs of shoes and 700,000 sheepskin coats.

Almost all industrial enterprises and workers in Kirov received state awards – orders, medals and the Challenge Red Banner – for their outstanding labour achievements.
