The coin is disc-shaped, white in color and has ledges along the rim on both sides — obverse and reverse. The material of the coin has no ferromagnetic characteristics.

The obverse

  • in the center — the relief image of the two-headed eagle, above it — the inscription along the rim: „БАНК РОССИИ” (BANK OF RUSSIA);
  • below to the right, under left paw of the eagle — the mint trade mark;
  • lower under the eagle — the denomination of the coin in words in one line: „ПЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ” (FIVE RUBLES), two horizontal lines divided by a dot and the year of mintage under it.

The reverse

  • in the center, a little to the left — denomination of the coin: the figure 5 and word under it „РУБЛЕЙ” (RUBLES) written horizontal;
  • below along the rim and on the right part of the disc — the stylized vegetable ornament in form of a branch with two interwoven caulescents.

  • in the center — the emblem of the Bank of Russia [the two-headed eagle with wings down, under it — the semicircular inscription: „БАНК РОССИИ” (BANK OF RUSSIA)], to the right under the eagle’s paw — the mint trade mark;
  • on the top along the rim — the denomination: „ПЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ” (FIVE RUBLES);
  • on the bottom of the coin — two horizontal lines divided by a dot and the year of mintage under it.

Since the second quarter of 2009 the coin with denomination of 5 Rubles of 1997 is made of nickel plated steel. The material of the coin has ferromagnetic characteristics.

The design and dimensions of this coin correspond to 5 Rubles coin of 1997 with the variety of obverse of 2002. The coins which had been made previously of copper-nickel clad copper remain in circulation on the territory of the Russian Federation as a legal tender.
