In August, the ruble money supply (M2) increased by 1.0% and amounted to 137.1 trn rubles on September 1, 2026. The annual growth rate of the monetary aggregate M2 slowed down to 12.8% (13.0% in July). The same indicator of the M2Х monetary aggregate (adjusted for foreign currency revaluation) decreased to 12.2% (12.6% in June). Starting October 1, 2026, the Bank of Russia will refine the approach to calculating the foreign currency revaluation of monetary statistics indicators.

Counterparts of the broad money
Claims on economy. The contribution of banking system claims on corporations and households to the annual growth of M2X continued to be decisive. In August, its annual contribution decreased and amounted to 15.1 trn rubles (15.9 trn rubles in July). Claims on corporations and households increased by 12.7 trn and 2.4 trn rubles respectively (13.4 trn and 2.5 trn rubles in July). The monthly growth of claims on corporations amounted to 1.7 trn rubles. In August, claims on households increased by 0.2 trn rubles, the same level as in July, predominantly owing to mortgages.
Net claims on general government. In August 2026 net claims on general government decreased by 0.5 trn rubles (-0,3 trn rubles in July). The contribution of budgetary operations to the annual growth of broad money M2X amounted to 6.1 trn rubles (6.0 trn rubles in July).
Net foreign assets. The contribution of net foreign assets of the banking system to annual growth of M2X in August remained negative (-1.8 trn rubles).

Change in the methodology for calculating revaluation
Starting from the data for September 2026 (as on 1 October 2026), the Bank of Russia will calculate foreign currency revaluation of monetary statistics indicators on the basis of the ruble-to-foreign currency exchange rates and changes in the accounting prices of precious metals instead of the ruble-to-U.S. dollar exchange rate (according to the current methodology). The change in methodology will ensure greater accuracy in the revaluation of indicators. Time series of indicators adjusted for foreign currency revaluation calculated using the current methodology will be moved to the Retrospective Information section. A comparison of growth rates for the M2Х monetary aggregate is shown in Table 3.

Methodological notes
Money supply includes cash and non-cash funds of residents of the Russian Federation. Various indicators of monetary aggregates are used to describe the dynamics of the money supply, they differ by the degree of liquidity. Monetary aggregate M0 (cash in circulation) is the most liquid aggregate. The widest aggregate is the broad money.

Adjustment for foreign currency revaluation for monetary aggregates in foreign currency in ruble terms (as a result of changes in the exchange rates of a foreign currencies against the ruble) makes it possible to analyse the changes of monetary aggregate over a certain period of time under unchanged exchange rates. Until September 1, 2026 (inclusive) the growth of aggregate in foreign currency adjusted for foreign currency revaluation is calculated as the growth of foreign currency / precious metals deposits in U.S. dollar terms, converted into rubles using the average arithmetic exchange rate at the beginning and the end of period. Starting October 1, 2026 the growth to be calculated as the growth of deposits in foreign currency / precious metals converted into rubles using the geometric average exchange rate of the respective foreign currency against the ruble or the accounting price of the precious metal for the period. |

Banking system claims on economy |
Depository corporations lending to households and corporations is accompanied by an increase of banks claims on these sectors and simultaneous growth of money supply through the rise of account balances and deposits of debtors. |

Net claims on general government |
Net claims on general government describes the impact of the budget system on money supply dynamics. The expenditure of budget funds and transfer of funds from government accounts to recipient corporations or households reduce funds on government accounts (increases net claims on general government) and rise accounts and deposits of credit recipients, thereby increasing the money supply. On the contrary, taxes and other payments to the budget system reduce accounts and deposits of corporations and households and increases government deposits in the banking system (reduce net claims on general government). |

Net foreign assets of the banking system (NFA) |
NFA reflects the impact of corporations and households operations with non-residents on money supply developments (foreign trade operations and operations with financial instruments of non-residents). For instance, transfer the export revenues to Russian credit institutions accounts increases foreign currency correspondent accounts of the Russian credit institution (increasing NFA) and foreign currency deposits in the banking system (growth of broad money). Import payments have the opposite effect. There are also other operations that lead to changes in net foreign assets. |
| Other factors | The transfer of funds from household accounts to escrow accounts (not included in monetary aggregates) as well as increase of the capital of the banking system (as a result of its growth due to retained earnings of credit institutions) has a restraining effect on money supply. |
