Expert Board on Domestic Currency Settlements meeting

26 September 2017
Press release

The Bank of Russia played host to the first meeting of the Expert Board on Domestic Currency Settlements. The meeting agenda included the current status and prospects for the use of domestic currencies in foreign trade settlements, current trends in the global currency system and the practical aspects of efforts to implement domestic currency settlements.

The meeting was attended by representatives of the Bank of Russia, the State Duma, the Eurasian Economic Commission, international financial organisations, Russian government agencies, the business community and leading economic research institutions.

The meeting approved the Board’s thematic priorities for 2017-2018: exploring the macroeconomic aspects of currency internationalisation, identification and elimination of barriers for importers/exporters, and retail payment system development.

The meeting participants discussed the current status of the initiative to set up a cross-border cash transfer system enabling remittances without a bank account, undertaken by CIS national postal operators under the aegis of the Universal Postal Union.

The Expert Board on Domestic Currency Settlements was launched in June 2017 with a view to devising recommendations on the rollout of cross-border cash transfers in Russian roubles and the national currencies of Russia’s trading partners. The Board includes representatives of the Bank of Russia, the Eurasian Economic Commission, the State Duma, the Economic Development Ministry and the Finance Ministry of Russia, as well as the Eurasian Development Bank, the Interstate Bank, the business community and leading Russian economic research institutions.
