Bank of Russia issues commemorative coins of precious and base metals

On 20 July 2020, the Bank of Russia issues the following commemorative coins:

  • a silver proof coin in the denomination of 1 ruble ‘175th Anniversary of the Russian Geographical Society’;
  • a base metal coin in the denomination of 10 rubles ‘Kozelsk, Kaluga Region’ of the series ‘Ancient Towns of Russia’.

Description of the precious metal coin:

A silver proof coin in the denomination of 1 ruble (fine metal content 7.78 g, fineness 925/1,000) has a round shape and is 25.0 mm in diameter.

The obverse and the reverse of the coin have a relief rim around the circumference.

The obverse of the coin features a relief image of the national emblem of the Russian Federation and the inscriptions ‘РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ’ (RUSSIAN FEDERATION) and ‘БАНК РОССИИ’ (BANK OF RUSSIA), the coin denomination ‘1 РУБЛЬ’ (1 RUBLE), the year of issue ‘2020 г.’ (2020), an indication of the metal according to the D.I. Mendeleyev Periodic System of Elements, fineness, the Saint Petersburg Mint trademark, and fine metal content.

The reverse of the coin (Catalogue No. 5109-0129) features a relief image of the emblem of the Russian Geographical Society against a stylised image of the net of the parallels and meridians of the Earth, and the inscription ‘175 ЛЕТ РУССКОМУ ГЕОГРАФИЧЕСКОМУ ОБЩЕСТВУ’ (THE 175TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RUSSIAN GEOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY) along the circumference.

The mintage of the coin is 5.0 thousand pcs.

Description of the base metal coin:

The coin has a round shape and is 27.0 mm in diameter. The coin is combined comprising a disc and an outer ring around it.

The obverse and the reverse of the coin have a relief rim around the circumference.

The edge of the coin is corrugated and has the inscription ‘ДЕСЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ’ (TEN RUBLES) recurring twice and divided by asterisks.

The obverse of the coin features the inscriptions along the circumference: ‘БАНК РОССИИ’ (BANK OF RUSSIA) at the top and ‘2020’ at the bottom. There are images of branches of the bay tree and oak tree on the left and on the right of the outer ring, respectively, their elements extending onto the disc. The number ‘10’ and the inscription ‘РУБЛЕЙ’ (RUBLES) below denoting the face value of the coin are in the centre of the disc. The digit ‘0’ features a security element inside in the form of the figure ‘10’ and the inscription ‘РУБ’ (RUB) visible at various viewing angles to the coin surface. The Moscow Mint trademark is at the bottom of the disc.

The reverse of the coin (Catalogue No. 5714-0069) features a view of the Nikolskaya Church, an image of the municipal arms of Kozelsk at the upper left, and the inscriptions on the outer ring: ‘ДРЕВНИЕ ГОРОДА РОССИИ’ (ANCIENT TOWNS OF RUSSIA) along the upper circumference and ‘КОЗЕЛЬСК’ (KOZELSK) along the lower circumference.

The mintage of the coin is 5.0 million pcs.

The new coins are legal tender of the Russian Federation and are mandatory for acceptance for all kinds of payments without any restrictions at their face value.
