At the 12th Ural Forum Information Security of Financial Sphere, the Bank of Russia held its first youth programme for students. The programme was aimed at young professionals seeking careers in information security in the financial market.

Fifty students made up 10 teams to take part in cyber-training focused on the development of practical skills in preventing cyber-attacks and countering their consequences, as well as in using cutting-edge security tools.

Leading experts in the sector told students about vital issues of information security in the financial sector. After that, participants presented their own solutions for ensuring the information security of financial organisations.

Ruslan Vesterovskiy, Deputy Governor of the Bank of Russia, told participants in the youth programme about possible career paths in the digital economy.

‘The Russian financial system is extensively being digitised. This is undoubtedly a positive trend. However, it calls for ensuring the cyber security of the new system. Only real professionals can do that, but unfortunately, they are a rare find,’ said Ruslan Vesterovskiy.

He said that the skills shortage is natural: ‘Cyber security of the financial system is a relatively new area. However, where there’s demand, there’s soon supply, and the Bank of Russia, together with the professional community and academia, is making great efforts to address the skills shortage.’

In particular, the Bank of Russia is working on educational and professional standards for cyber security specialists in the financial sector. The next stage will provide for the certification of professionals in the cyber security of financial organisations.
