According to the Bank of Russia’s data, the amount of cash in circulation increased by 1.2% – the lowest rise in past nine years – to total ₽18.7 trillion as of 1 January 2025.
Demand for cash was steady in 2024 with slight seasonal fluctuations. The first quarter saw cash return to banks amid high deposit rates. April and December registered usual spikes in demand for cash before public holidays.
There was a rise in the portion of small-denomination banknotes in the structure of cash in circulation. The reason was that the Bank of Russia resumed printing ₽5 and ₽10 banknotes, with modified ₽100 banknotes gradually entering circulation.
