₽135 million is not chump change: Coin Week results

2 July 2024
News

Russians brought over 31 million coins to banks during the Coin Week, which took place from 20 May to 2 June. That is almost 1.5 times more than last year. In total, people put ₽135 million back into circulation, exchanging coins for banknotes or depositing them in their bank accounts.

The largest number of coins was collected in Central Russia, Siberia and the Urals. The 1-, 5- and 10-ruble coins were turned in most commonly, although some Russians only exchanged low-denomination coins of under 1 ruble or solely kopecks. People brought money in bags, plastic containers and even 5-litre bottles. A personal record was set by a Russian who had collected about 50,000 coins (175 kg) in a year.

The Coin Week spurred great interest: according to the survey on монетнаянеделя.рф, 92% of the respondents supported the campaign and believe it should continue to be held in future.
