Banks prevent theft of ₽2 trillion: 2024 Q1 results
According to the Review of Reporting on Information Security Incidents Related to Funds Transfers, in January—March 2024, banks countered almost 13.9 million attempts of cyber fraudsters to steal money from clients.
This was mostly due to the fact that credit institutions are constantly improving their anti-fraud systems. Moreover, banks continue to upgrade their business processes before the coming into force of the law on the new mechanisms to counter cyber fraud.
Nevertheless, the situation remains complicated. In 2024 Q1, the malefactors managed to steal ₽4.3 billion from banks’ clients, which is 6.3% below the figures of 2023 Q1. The amount of individuals’ losses exceeds the average theft indicators of 2023 by 8%, whereas the number of fraudulent transactions remained almost unchanged.
The Bank of Russia initiated the blocking of 14,800 fraudulent websites and pages on social networks and provided communication operators with information about 48,600 telephone numbers used by the malefactors for subsequent blocking.
