Banks prevent fraudulent transactions worth almost ₽1.7 trillion
In 2023 Q3, banks repelled 10.8 million attacks on accounts of their customers, compared to 6.6 million in 2023 Q2, as stated in the Review of Reporting on Information Security Incidents Related to Funds Transfers.
Attackers’ activity was more intense in July—September. They managed to successfully conduct 288,800 unauthorised transactions. This is 23% higher than the average value for the previous four quarters. In contrast, the amount of damage to people from fraudsters’ activities declined by 11.3% compared to the corresponding period and equalled ₽3.6 billion.
In July—September, the regulator initiated the blocking of 141,800 telephone numbers used to swindle people. One of the most popular schemes among swindlers is to make telephone calls and send letters allegedly on behalf of Bank of Russia employees, including via messengers. Over the eight months of 2023, the regulator received 24,500 questions and appeals from people who faced such problems.
