UIFs very popular among retail investors: results of 2023 Q1

News

In 2023 Q1, the number of individual investors in unit investment funds (UIFs) increased by 8.6% and totalled 8.6 million people. Most of the unit holders were interested in exchange-traded UIFs, which was largely due to low fees and ease of purchase. However, the popularity of closed-end UIFs primarily dealing with commercial real estate leasing also continues to increase among retail investors.

The interest of retail customers in UIFs is stimulated by their desire to entrust their investments to professionals, low interest rates on deposits, and the opportunity to diversify even small investment amounts.

The returns of retail UIFs remained double-digit as the Russian stock market grew. The weighted average returns of exchange-traded UIFs and open-ended UIFs were 10.6% and 11.8%, respectively.
