The Chuvash Republic is located in the centre of European Russia – the Volga-Vyatka Region. The Republic’s capital city is Cheboksary. Although the Chuvash Republic has one of the smallest areas among constituent territories of the Russian Federation, it is advantageously located on the Volga River – the country’s main water artery.
The Chuvash people account for two thirds of the Republic’s population. They have preserved their folklore, language, and customs, which gives the region its unique identity. The Chuvash language along with Russian is the official language in the Republic, with 76% of the population regarding it as their native tongue.
The Chuvash Republic boasts an extraordinary natural setting. Among the Republic’s riches are vast forests covering a third of its area. The plant life in Chuvashia is exceptionally abundant. There are over 300 plant species, including rare ferns, water chestnuts, and yellow water-lilies as well as expansive oak, birch, and spruce forests. More than 60 species of animals and 160 species of birds inhabit the forests. The most precious species of plants and animals are preserved in natural reserves. Chuvashia is a land of not only forests but also rivers. In addition to the Volga River with Cheboksary and Kuybyshev Reservoirs, and the Sura River, there are more than 2,300 small rivers and creeks, 750 lakes, and 650 ponds.
The Republic’s leading industries are machine building, metalworking, electricity generation, consumer goods and chemical industries. The Republic is Russia’s leader in growing hops, accounting for 70–90% of the national output of hops, depending on the year.
