Leonid Govorov (1897–1955) was a Soviet commander, Marshal of the Soviet Union, Hero of the Soviet Union, a holder of the Order of the Victory, and a member of the Academy of Artillery Sciences.
In the very beginning of the Great Patriotic War (in July 1941), he became Chief of Artillery on the Soviet Western Front. On 15 October 1941, at the height of the battle for Moscow, at the request of Georgy Zhukov, Commander of the Western Front, Leonid Govorov, Major General of Artillery, was appointed Commander of the 5th Army, which had to bear all the brunt of the defensive battles on the outskirts of Moscow close to Mozhaysk. L. Govorov was awarded the Order of Lenin for disrupting the enemy’s offensive against Moscow.
After the Moscow battle, in April 1942, on G. Zhukov’s recommendation, L. Govorov was sent to Leningrad to command the group of troops of the Leningrad Front, which defended the city. In June 1942, the General Headquarters appointed him Commander of the Leningrad Front. It was for the first time in the Soviet military history that an artillery general became a front commander. Colonel General L. Govorov was awarded two Orders of Suvorov 1st class for his outstanding skills in commanding the troops during military operations to break through and completely lift the siege of Leningrad and for combat achievements.
After the excellent Vyborg offensive, which resulted in the defeat of the main part of Finnish armed forces and the subsequent withdrawal of Finland from the war, Marshal L. Govorov headed the preparation and execution of a number of operations, which were unique from the military perspective: the Narva and Tallinn offensives and the Moonsund landing operation. In conducting these operations, L. Govorov skilfully combined land and air forces and ships of the Baltic Fleet.
Starting from 1 October 1944, L. Govorov simultaneously commanded his front and coordinated the activities of the 2nd and 3rd Baltic Fronts during the Riga offensive aimed at liberating the capital of Latvia, the city of Riga. After the Soviet troops captured the city on l6 October 1944, his front participated in blocking the remnants of the Army Group North on the Courland Peninsula. For the successful offensive there, L. Govorov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union on 27 January 1945.
