Komsomolsk-on-Amur was awarded the honorary title City of Labour Valour for the great contribution of its residents to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, uninterrupted manufacture of military and civilian products at industrial enterprises and people’s labour heroism and commitment.

In 1938, the cruiser Kaganovich was laid down at Shipyard No. 199. However, later all plants that were to produce equipment, components, and armaments required for the vessel remained in territories occupied by Nazi forces. Despite this fact, the shipyard workers managed to manufacture the missing mechanisms and parts themselves using available capacities and resources so that the powerful cruiser was received by the Soviet Navy in 1944. Between 1941 and 1945, the Soviet Navy received from the shipyard nine new warships, two ferries and 17 repaired submarines.

With the onset of the war, Aircraft Plant No. 126 was modernised for combat tasks. As early as July 1941, this plant started to produce from two to three aircraft per day for the front. These were the legendary Il-4 long-range bombers. A total of 2,775 such bombers were produced during the war years. The plant was awarded the Order of Lenin for the outstanding fulfilment of the mission to produce Il-4 combat aircraft.

During the war, new production facilities were rapidly constructed in Komsomolsk-on-Amur. Over extremely short periods of time, several plants were brought into operation, i.e. a battery plant, Amurstal, Amurlitmash, and an oil refinery. Having produced its first battery in April 1942, the battery plant produced 4,000 units during the first year of its operation. Launched in February 1942, the Amurstal plant provided Far Eastern enterprises with the metal required to produce ammunition. In August 1942, the Amurlitmash plant began producing goods and became a true arsenal of the Soviet Far East. This plant manufactured tanks, naval and coastal artillery, small arms, as well as cases for shells, bombs, mines and cartridges. The construction of the oil refinery, which was commissioned in 1 December 1942, was also an exemplary labour effort. In the first year alone, the plant processed 191,000 tonnes of Sakhalin oil.
