The city was founded in 1825 as Batalpashinskaya stanitsa (village) at the location of a former military fortification – Batalpashinsky Cossack redoubt. Its original name is a rare case when a settlement was named after the defeated rather than the victor. Here, the Russian army defeated the army led by Ottoman seraskier Batal Pasha in September 1790.

The city was renamed Cherkessk in 1939 and has retained this name ever since.

Cherkessk was the centre of the Karachayevo-Circassian Autonomous Area over the period from 1957 and became the official capital of the Karachayevo-Circassian Republic in 1991.

In the late 1930s, Cherkessk opened an iron foundry, the first large industrial enterprise in Karachayevo-Circassia. Today, Cherkessk is the economic leader in the Karachayevo-Circassian Republic, accounting for more than half of the Republic’s industrial output.

The material was provided by the Mayor’s Office of Cherkessk.
