The Russian Academy of Sciences was established by the order of Emperor Peter I according to the Decree of the Governing Senate issued on 28 January (8 February) 1724.
The foundation of the Academy of Sciences was directly associated with the reforms implemented by Peter I to strengthen the state and its economic and political sovereignty. The Emperor was perfectly aware of the role of science and people’s education and culture for the country’s prosperity. Laurentius Blumentrost, the personal physician to Peter I, was appointed as the first President of the Academy. The Academy quickly became one of the leading scientific institutions in Europe.
The Academy carries out research and provides academic advising for research conducted in the Russian Federation. Structured depending on scientific areas and geographic regions, the Russian Academy of Sciences comprises departments specialising in various scientific domains and regional departments.
The Academy submits annual reports to the Russian President and the Government of the Russian Federation on its research and scientific and technical results, as well as proposals regarding priority development areas in fundamental and applied sciences.
