Representatives of the Ingush people took the oath of allegiance to the Russian state in spring 1770, near the village of Angusht on the flat terrain of Barta Bose (translated from the Ingush language as ‘the Slope of Accord’). The Treaty of Ingushetia’s Voluntary Accession to Russia signed by the Ingush elders was approved by the Foreign Affairs Board of Russia on 12 July 1770.

The Ingush are one of the most ancient peoples of the North Caucasus, with distinctive history and culture. The Ingush material culture primarily comprises monuments of architecture intended for housing and defence, and funerary and religious ceremonies. Their uniqueness and splendour have long attracted scholars’ attention. There are nearly 1,500 historical and cultural landmarks in Ingushetia, about 100 of which are tower settlements located on flattened mountain ridges or in the depths of gorges. An important area of the Ingush spiritual culture is oral folk arts, namely legends, folk tales, songs, and dances featuring grace, flexibility, elegance and simplicity. The Republic of Ingushetia is actively developing its tourism industry for travellers to explore the rich culture and heritage of the region.
