The 300th Anniversary of the Russian Fleet
Obverse
the two-headed eagle designed by artist I. Bilibin. The inscriptions along the rim: at the top — «3 РУБЛЯ 1996 г.» (3 RUBLES 1996), at the bottom — «БАНК РОССИИ» (BANK OF RUSSIA). The letters below indicate the metal sign, the fineness, the mint trademark and the fine metal content.
Reverse
to the left - the icebreaker Yermak; to the right - a portrait of Admiral Stepan Makarov with the inscription under it - " С.О. МАКАРОВ" (S. O. MAKAROV). The inscriptions along the rim: at the top on a ribbon - "300-ЛЕТИЕ РОССИЙСКОГО ФЛОТА" (THE 300TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE RUSSIAN FLEET), at the bottom - "ЛЕДОКОЛ "ЕРМАК" (THE ICEBREAKER "YERMAK").

Built under the direction of Admiral Stepan Makarov, the Yermak was the world's first icebreaker capable of breaking through heavy ice. In 1899 it made its first voyage to the Arctic, in 1918 it took part in the winter expedition of the Baltic fleet, in 1938 it participated in the evacuation of the Polar station Severny Polyus-1 and in 1941-1945 it led ships through the ice in the Baltic Sea.
