Akhmat-Khadzhi Kadyrov (1951–2004) was the first president of the Chechen Republic. In 1995, he was elected as mufti of the Chechen Republic. On 12 June 2000, the President of the Russian Federation, by his Executive Order, appointed Akhmat-Khadzhi Kadyrov as Head of the Chechen Republic. In 2001, he was awarded the Order of Friendship pursuant to an Executive Order of the President of the Russian Federation. On 5 October 2003, in a nationwide vote, he was elected as President of the Chechen Republic. By Executive Order of the President of the Russian Federation No. 606, dated 10 May 2004, Akhmat-Khadzhi Kadyrov was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation for fortitude and valour demonstrated during the restoration of the Chechen Republic and in combat against terrorism.
