The Bolshoi Theater, founded in 1776, is one of the Russian and world centers of music and theater. Its present building was built in 1824 by architects O.I. Bovet and A.A. Mikhailov. It was reconstructed in 1856 by architect A.K. Kavos. The Bolshoi Theater is a model of the Russian architecture of the middle XIXth century. First Russian and foreign operas and ballets were staged here.
