Fyodor Fyodorovich Petrov (1902-1978) was a Soviet artillery designer. He led the development of the 122 mm howitzer M1938 (М-30), which the Red Army adopted in September 1939.
The М-30 incorporated all the principles which Petrov applied in artillery design: simple production, high technological effectiveness, unification and standardisation, which meant it could be mass produced within short timeframes and at significantly reduced costs.
The howitzer was used to destroy enemy manpower and fieldworks. Fragments of its 122 mm missiles could pierce the armour or wreck individual elements of light and, if pointed directly, medium tanks.
The М-30 was among the most mass-produced artillery systems of the Red Army during the Great Patriotic War. Easy maintenance, reliability and robustness made it one of the best weapons of this bore.
