The city of Stalingrad was called in the Order of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief on May 1, 1945 as one of the first hero cities. According to the Regulations of the title of hero cities, adopted on May 8, 1965, the highest distinction class "Hero City" accompanied by the awarding with the Lenin Order and the Gold Star Medal has been conferred on the city of Stalingrad for the mass heroism and courage of its defenders displayed in the struggle for freedom and independence of the Motherland during the Great Patriotic War.
