Sviyazhsk is an outstanding complex historical, urban planning, architectural, artistic and natural landscape monument of the 16th–20th centuries, which has remained almost unchanged to this day. The scale and image of the historical and architectural environment have preserved, existing in full harmony with the unique beauty of the surrounding nature.

The state historical, architectural and fine arts museum ‘Sviyazhsk Town-Island’ was established in 2009 by the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Tatarstan as part of the reorganisation of the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan. In 2015, the museum was transformed into the State Historical, Architectural and Fine Arts Museum Reserve ‘Sviyazhsk Town-Island’.

The museum reserve operates in the territory of the place of interest ‘Sviyazhsk Town-Island’, where land plots are not withdrawn from residents so that they may engage in construction and economic activities. The area of responsibility of the museum reserve covers the UNESCO World Heritage Site – the Assumption Cathedral and Monastery.

The socio-cultural goal and mission of the museum reserve is to maintain and promote the spiritual, historical, cultural and natural heritage of Sviyazhsk, ensuring access to its cultural and natural treasures for the benefit of Russia’s spiritual and cultural advancement, as well as the social and economic development of the local community.
