The Dauriyan hedgehog (Erinaceus dauricus Sundevall) inhabits in the steppes of the south and south eastern regions of the Transbaikal (this region is known as Daurskaya land Dauriya). The population of this species has been reducing in the last 40 years.It is under protection on the shores of the Toreysky lakes in the eastern part of the region behind the Baikal Lake.
