Obverse

in the center — the Emblem of the Bank of Russia (the two headed eagle designed by I.Bilibin, lower — the semicircular inscription — «БАНК РОССИИ» (BANK OF RUSSIA) framed by a circle of dots and inscriptions along the rim: at the top — «ОДИН РУБЛЬ» (ONE RUBLE), at the bottom —«1999», the letters to the left indicate the metal sign and the fineness, to the right — the fine metal content and the mint trade mark.

Reverse

the picture of two hedgehogs. The inscription at the top along the rim: «ДАУРСКИЙ ЁЖ» (THE DAURIYAN HEDGEHOG).

The Dauriyan hedgehog (Erinaceus dauricus Sundevall) inhabits in the steppes of the south and south eastern regions of the Transbaikal (this region is known as Daurskaya land Dauriya). The population of this species has been reducing in the last 40 years.It is under protection on the shores of the Toreysky lakes in the eastern part of the region behind the Baikal Lake.
