Magadan was awarded the honorary title City of Labour Valour for the great contribution of its residents to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, uninterrupted manufacture of military and civilian products at industrial enterprises and people’s labour heroism and commitment.

In 1941–1944, Magadan geologists explored 150 new gold deposits. In the war years, 55.5% of all gold produced in the USSR (360.2 tonnes) was mined in the Kolyma fields. Magadan gold was an essential strategic resource, which the USSR used to pay its allies for supplies under the Lend-Lease programme. In 1945, the Dalstroy Trust (Far Eastern Construction Company) was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour.

Because of the presence of Japanese warships, which interfered with the delivery of equipment and food to the region, Magadan factories and mining cooperatives undertook the task of providing miners with clothing and food, as well as performing on-site repairs of equipment for mines and gold deposits. The Magadan Autorepair plant worked for the front. It expanded the output of mining equipment, as well as motor and marine transport. During the war, the Marchekan plant manufactured 550,000 buckets for excavators and other types of machinery, hundreds of electrical devices and gas generator units, as well as compressors, crushers, electric drills, and other equipment for Dalstroy. In the autumn of 1941, a glass workshop, which was the only one in the region, was established. The workshop produced lamps, car headlights, tableware, scarce sheet glass for greenhouses, and other items. During the war, the Magadan Industrial Plant launched the production of goods on the basis of recycled materials. For example, trays were stamped from old car bonnets and fenders, tin was extracted from old tin cans, and cotton waste was used to manufacture work clothes, cotton wool, quilted work jackets, blankets, and footwear.

The Nagaevo Seaport also worked for the front; it received and dispatched goods to the mainland despite provocations of Japanese warships.

The city’s aircraft repair workshops not only repaired aircraft, but also assembled new aircraft from two or three damaged ones. During the war, Magadan aviators transported over 19,500 passengers and delivered 5.68 tonnes of cargo to miners.
