Krasnoyarsk was awarded the honorary title City of Labour Valour for the great contribution of its residents to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, uninterrupted manufacture of military and civilian products at industrial enterprises and people’s labour heroism and commitment.

With the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, 29 major factories and plants and 30,000 workers were evacuated to Krasnoyarsk.

In 1941, the city’s oldest locomotive and railway repair plant (PVRZ) took equipment of the plants from Poltava, Voronezh, Kharkov, and Izyum. During the war years, this plant produced five armoured trains, as well as special-purpose trains and steam locomotives. In 1945, PVRZ was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labour and received the Challenge Red Banner of the State Defence Committee for perpetual storage – for exemplary services to the Motherland and outstanding labour achievements.

The Krasnoyarsk Machine-Building Plant took equipment of plants from Leningrad, Kaluga and Stalingrad, and also helped restore Plant No. 4 named after K. Voroshilov. During the war years, the workers of this plant manufactured 26,000 anti-aircraft guns of various calibres, over 5,000 regimental mortars, 220,000 aerial bombs, and 3,500 naval mines.

In the autumn of 1941, rail cars carrying equipment of the Krasnyi Profintern Plant from the town of Bezhitsa, Bryansk Region arrived in Krasnoyarsk. It took workers, Red Army soldiers and residents, who worked almost entirely by hand, two months to unload 6,000 rail cars of equipment weighing over 190,000 tonnes. During the first year of its operation, the plant manufactured 1,840 mortars, 22,000 nose fuses for shells, and almost 400,000 hand grenades.

Krasnoyarsk was an important spot on the secrete Alaska-Siberian air route, along which American aircraft were delivered to the USSR. In Krasnoyarsk, these aircraft underwent maintenance before being sent to the front. Between 1942 and 1945, nearly 8,000 aircraft were delivered along this route.

During the war period, the city hosted over 60 evacuation hospitals. The most seriously wounded Red Army soldiers requiring long-term treatment were brought here. In 1942, in order to train qualified physicians, a medical institute was opened in Krasnoyarsk. It was created on the basis of the institutes evacuated from Voronezh and Leningrad.
