Barnaul was awarded the honorary title City of Labour Valour for the great contribution of its residents to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, uninterrupted manufacture of military and civilian products at industrial enterprises and people’s labour heroism and commitment.

At the very beginning of the Great Patriotic War, over 100 industrial enterprises were relocated to the regions beyond the Urals. Barnaul, which already had a developed industrial base, took 14 of them. The city became a multi-industry centre for arms production and a leader in ammunition manufacturing. Every second Soviet cartridge was produced by Plant No. 17 (today it is known as the Barnaul Machine-Tool Building Plant), which was awarded the Order of Lenin in 1945 for the successful implementation of front-line tasks. Every fifth Soviet T-34 tank was equipped with a diesel engine assembled at the Transmash Plant, which represented production facilities relocated from Stalingrad and Kharkov. In 1942, the Barnaul Railway Car Repair Plant was among the first plants in the country to be awarded by the Order of the Red Banner of Labour for its labour achievements.

In Barnaul, there were 11 military schools. Of these, the Artillery Mortar Military School alone prepared 6,774 officers over five years, six of which were awarded the tile of Hero of the Soviet Union.

Almost 32,500 Barnaul residents, or more than 15% of the city’s total population, were awarded the medal For Valorous Labour during the Great Patriotic War.
