The Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 was the war fought by the Soviet people against Nazi Germany and its allies, a part of the Second World War, that ended with the victory of the USSR and the unconditional surrender of the German armed forces.

Germany invaded the USSR on 22 June 1941, expecting to defeat the Soviet Union in a swift military campaign, but encountered fierce resistance from the Soviet armed forces. The war dragged on for several years and ended with the total defeat of Germany. The German Instrument of Surrender was signed on 8 May 1945.

The Soviet Union suffered enormous human and economic losses, but its costly victory in the Great Patriotic War played a crucial role in the overthrow of Nazism worldwide and predetermined the outcome of the Second World War.
