The Monument to Minin and Pozharski was the first monument in Russia erected to civilians – the heroes of the national liberation war against the Polish and Lithuanian invaders in the early XVIIth century. It was erected on public subscription by sculptor Ivan Martos in 1818. Intercession Cathedral, known as the Cathedral of St. Basil the Blessed, was built by order of Russian Tsar Ivan the Terrible in 1551-1561 to commemorate the annexation of Kazan and Astrakhan khanates to Russia. According to the ancient chronicles, its architects were Ivan Barma and Yakov Postnik.
