The Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (VDNKh) is the world’s largest exposition, museum and recreational complex. It opened on 1 August 1939 and had a number of different names in the past, including the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition, VDNKh USSR, and the All-Russia Exhibition Centre.
The decision to build the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition was made at the Second All-Union Congress of Collective Farm Workers. To prove the success of collective farm construction, the Congress decided to create an abundance of facilities within the fenced area of the Ostankino Park. A forgotten and unremarkable patch of wasteland along the north-eastern border of Moscow turned into a unique exhibition town with 136 hectares accommodating 52 diverse pavilions and 200 various other buildings. The exhibition has become a favourite leisure spot for Moscow residents and tourists.
Today, VDNKh is a unique venue for museum and exhibition projects, international business expositions and congresses, festivals and celebrations, and one of the most popular public spaces in Moscow. The site of 325 hectares accommodates historical pavilions, arches, museums, ponds, parks, alleys, fountains, flower gardens, and sculptures. VDNKh offers its visitors to discover outstanding architectural masterpieces that, taken together, represent a monument to the Soviet era and showcase styles prevailing in different historical periods. They include the ‘Worker and Collective Farm Woman’ monument, the ‘Friendship of the Peoples’ and ‘Stone Flower’ fountains, as well as the Agriculture, Soviet Culture, and Cosmos Pavilions, and others.
