The Buryat-Mongol Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was established on 30 May 1923. Buryatia adopted its current name on 27 March 1991.

The Republic of Buryatia is a constituent territory of the Russian Federation and a part of the Far-Eastern Federal District. The administrative and economic as well as cultural centre of the Republic is Ulan-Ude.

Buryatia is situated in the southern part of Eastern Siberia, to the south and the east of Baikal, the world’s deepest freshwater lake. Its largest part (nearly 60% of the shoreline) is located in Buryatia. Baikal is a natural reservoir of one-fifth of the world’s supply of the purest fresh water. The lake is inhabited by 2,500 animal and fish species, including 250 endemics.

The Republic of Buryatia is a promising Russian region in terms of its tourism and recreation potential. The development of tourism is promoted by its convenient location, the richest historical and cultural resources and nature, a well-established transport system connecting the Republic with other Russian regions and foreign states, a stable environmental situation, a peaceful coexistence of different religions, and the growing popularity of Baikal.
