Obverse

the two-headed eagle (designed by I.Bilibin), the letters under it indicate the metal sign, the fineness, the mint trademark and the fine metal content. The inscriptions along the rim: at the top — "3 РУБЛЯ 1994 г." (3 RUBLES 1994), at the bottom — "БАНК РОССИИ" (BANK OF RUSSIA).

Reverse

a self-portrait of Vasily Surikov, under it - fragments of his painting "Boyarynia (noblewoman) Morozova" (from left to right - the dome of a church, a running boy, Boyarynia Morozova in a sledge, a wanderer woman and God's man), below - a palette with brushes and the painter's facsimile signature. The inscription at the top along the rim — "РОССИЯ И МИРОВАЯ КУЛЬТУРА" (RUSSIA AND WORLD CULTURE).

Vasily Ivanovich Surikov (January 24 (12), 1848-March 19 (6), 1916) - a Russian historical painter and an Itinerant (member of the Society of Wandering Exhibitions). His monumental paintings such as "The Morning of the Execution of Streltsy", "Boyarynia Morozova", "The Conquest of Siberia by Yermak" and "Suvorov and his Army Crossing the Alps" are polyphonic masterpieces, intense in colour and content. He also created portraits and watercolour landscapes.
