Detection of counterfeit money: 2016 Q4 statistics

The number of detected counterfeit Bank of Russia currency units in the Russian banking system totaled 14,322 in the last three months of 2016. The biggest number of counterfeits has been found among 5000-ruble banknotes (8,125 sheets), followed by 1000-ruble banknotes (5,701 sheets). Far less counterfeit banknotes were detected among 10-ruble banknotes (7 sheets). The number of detected counterfeit 10-ruble and 5-ruble coins totaled 13 and 41 units respectively.

As for counterfeits in foreign currencies, they totaled 1,581 in the last quarter of 2016. Of those 863 units were detected in November and 187 units in December. The vast majority of counterfeit banknotes were US dollars (1527 sheets). Other detected counterfeits included the euro, the Chinese renminbi, two Japanese yens and one British pound.
