76 symbols representing 49 Russian cities made it to the second round of the contest to select symbols for Bank of Russia new banknotes. The last symbol to collect 5,000 votes was Green Mountain in the Kemerovo Region (Sheregesh), while the last vote on a dedicated website (Твоя-Россия.рф) was given to Pobeda movie cinema in the city of Leninsk-Kuznetsk of the Kemerovo Region.

An extended list of all qualifiers is available on website (твоя-россия.рф/symbols).

Overall, 1,111,496 people took part in the first round. They submitted 5,152 symbols from 1,113 cities.

‘Citizens of Russia turned out to be enthusiastic about the news that they could submit votes with symbols of their cities. Besides on-site submissions, several thousand requests to consider various symbols were sent to our e-mail and regular mail. People submitted sketches, drawings and collages of future banknotes depicting sightseeing attractions and historic sites of their cities and regions which is indicative of the popularity of this contest’, says Alexander Torshin, State Secretary — Deputy Governor of the Bank of Russia.

Active preparations for the second qualifying round started today. They are carried out by the Public Opinion Foundation within the All-Russian public inquiry. It will be held from August 5 through 30 to cover the entire territory of Russia — from Sakhalin to Kaliningrad and from Murmansk to Derbent. The inquiry will take place in more than 200 Russian locations — from villages to million-plus cities with 6,000 interviews to be taken involving respondents from 18 years old.

‘Public inquiry analysis in the selection of cities and corresponding symbols is important indeed. This is the first time the Bank of Russia performed such large-scale inquiry which will take really popular national symbols to appear on new banknotes’, says Alexander Oslon, President of the Public Opinion Foundation.

The all-Russian selection of symbols for new 200- and 2,000-ruble banknotes was initiated by the Bank of Russia. Never before the Russians could submit and select symbols for new banknotes by themselves. The contest is a three-round procedure with 7 October 2016 being its final day when the winners will be announced.
