Detection of counterfeit banknotes: 2017 Q1 statistics

In the first three months of 2017, 12,447 counterfeit Bank of Russia notes were detected in the Russian banking system. The greatest number of counterfeits was found among 5000-ruble banknotes (6813 sheets), closely followed by 1000-ruble notes (5217 sheets). The fewest counterfeits were detected among 10-ruble banknotes (2). Regarding counterfeit coins, 18 10-ruble coins, 37 5-ruble coins and one 2-ruble coin were detected.

In the first quarter of 2017, the number of counterfeit foreign currency banknotes detected totalled 638. Of these, 371 counterfeits were found in March, 125 — in January, and 142 — in February. The US dollar was the clear leader among counterfeit banknotes (596 sheets). Other foreign currency counterfeit notes detected included the euro, the Chinese yuan, and the British pound.
