The Scarlet Flower is a Soviet full-length animated film directed by Lev Atamanov and based on Sergey Aksakov’s fairy tale about a young man turned into a beast and a young woman who, through her love towards him, transforms him back into a human.

The fairy tale was first printed in 1858 as an appendix to the family chronicle ‘Childhood Years of Bagrov–Grandson’. The first animated film based on this fairy tale was released nearly a century later – in 1952. The images of the heroes were created by artist Leonid Shvartsman.
