Yaroslavl was awarded the honorary title City of Labour Valour for the great contribution of its residents to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, uninterrupted manufacture of military and civilian products at industrial enterprises and people’s labour heroism and commitment.
After the beginning of the Great Patriotic War, Yaroslavl enterprises very rapidly switched to the production of military-purpose products. During the war period, they supplied over 120 types of such products: bodies of general-purpose and armour-piercing shells for anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns, mines and aerial bombs, parts of rocket shells, mine fuses, mortars, one-and-a-half-ton and three-ton dump trucks, artillery tractors, units and parts for tanks, and combat boats. These enterprises also produced incendiary bombs, main parts for Kathusha rocket launchers, Shpagin submachine guns, and many other weapons. The city remained a leading producer of textile; it almost doubled the output of chemical and rubber products and more than doubled the output of machines.
The labour feat of Yaroslavl residents was best of all manifested by the fact that it was achieved in the absence of part of industrial equipment and skilled personnel, which had been evacuated to other cities in 1941. Nonetheless, despite the said shortages, all the tasks set for the city enterprises were fulfilled.
From the second half of 1941 and throughout 1942, the Yaroslavl Tyre Plant was the only supplier of tyres for aviation, artillery, tanks, and motor vehicles in the country. Notwithstanding the partial dismantling and evacuation of equipment in late 1941, the plant increased its output, and its engineers developed new types of tyre composition and coating. For its labour achievements, the plant’s staff was honoured with the Challenge Red Banner of the State Defence Committee 22 times; in 1946, this award was handed over to the staff forever.
The Yaroslavl Motor Plant also switched to the output of military-purpose products. In 1943, the plant designed and assembled the first fully-tracked artillery tractor which was much needed for the Red Army. It was a manoeuvrable vehicle with such a high cross-country ability that it was used even in reconnaissance. It total, the plant produced about 2,000 Ya-12 artillery tractors; it also produced Ya-11 and Ya-13 modifications.
