The museum-preserve is located in the territory of the Alexandrovsky Kremlin, a residence of Moscow monarchs founded in 1510. It is known as the famous Alexandrovskaya Sloboda – the oprichnina capital of Tsar Ivan the Terrible.

At the behest of Grand Prince of Moscow Vasily III, a magnificent palace was erected here. Alexandrovskaya Sloboda was among the best countryside residences and a place where the Monarch, his family and court stayed on a regular basis.

Over the course of the fierce struggle for power in the second half of the 16th century, Alexandrovskaya Sloboda played a special role during the period of the establishment of the Tsarist autocracy. Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible turned it into the actual capital of the state. Alexandrovskaya Sloboda was the location of boards, the Boyar Duma and other government bodies. This was also a place of operation of one of the first Russian printing houses. The Alexandrovsky Kremlin was a venue for the reception of ambassadors from England, Denmark, Poland and Lithuania, and the Crimean Khanate. Political and commercial treaties were signed in the chambers of the Alexandrovsky Kremlin.
