2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the Russian nuclear industry.

On 20 August 1945, it was decided to establish First Chief Directorate under the Council of People’s Commissars of the Soviet Union to manage the nuclear project. The Soviet nuclear industry was created to protect the country and the whole world from new global conflicts.

After the nuclear shield had ensured the country’s safety, scientists and engineers were able to put nuclear power to use for peaceful purposes. Our country was the first to build a nuclear power station, a nuclear ice-breaker and a tokamak (a device to study thermonuclear fusion).

These days, State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, established in 2007, is among the Top-10 Russian companies. It operates in 50 countries on 5 continents. Russian nuclear power stations cover nearly a fifth of the country’s energy requirements without any greenhouse gas pollution.

The nuclear industry still remains at the forefront of research and technology. Rosatom not only builds innovative new generation power units but also develops the most promising areas, such as supercomputers, composite materials, additive technologies, digital products, wind power, and radiation medicine.

Ahead of time, the nuclear industry works for the good of the country and people.
