Rybinsk is the second largest city of the Yaroslavl Region.

It is considered to be the successor of the settlement Ust-Sheksna located on the bank of the Volga River that was first mentioned in the chronicle back in 1071.

Already in the 12–13th centuries, the settlement was developing trade. In the 16th century, Rybnaya Sloboda (the city’s name until 1777) supplied fish from the Volga River to the grand duke’s and, later on, tsar’s kitchen. The sturgeon fisheries of the settlement were among the best in the country.

The fish market of Rybnaya Sloboda was one of the largest in Russia. In the 18th century, the settlement became the major transshipment point on the Upper Volga, which promoted the development of trade. This is when the Rybinsk merchant class originated.

As a result of the administrative reform, in 1777, Rybnaya Sloboda became the regional centre and was renamed the city of Rybnoy according to the order of Empress Catherine II.

Today, Rybinsk is a large industrial centre specialising in aircraft engines, tractor diesel engines, snow vehicles, four-wheelers, and vessels for various purposes.
