The 300th Anniversary of the Military Education in Russia. The Navigation School
Obverse
in the center — the Emblem of the Bank of Russia [the two-headed eagle with wings down, lower — the semicircular inscription — «БАНК РОССИИ» (BANK OF RUSSIA)] framed by a circle of dots and inscriptions along the rim: at the top — «ТРИ РУБЛЯ» (THREE RUBLES), at the bottom — the year of issue «2001», the letters to the left indicate the metal sign and the fineness, to the right — the fine metal content and the mint trade mark.
Reverse
to the left at the top — the date «1701», lower – a star globe, to the right at the bottom — the Sukharev Tower, lower — a sea map, dividers, a set square, at the bottom — a book and a compass on it. The inscription at the top along the rim on a ribbon: «НАВИГАЦКАЯ ШКОЛА» (THE NAVIGATION SCHOOL).

The School for mathematical and navigation sciences has been founded under the highest Ukase of Peter I on January 14, 1701. This act marked the beginning of the military education in Russia. Five months later the Sukharev Tower was assigned for the Navigation School. The School used to be at that time the only one governmental secular educational establishment. The graduates of the School — first Russian seamen, hydrographers, topographers, engineers, artillerymen, teachers for new educational institutions set up later. They were used not only in the fleet but also in other economic branches.
