Obverse

in the center — the Emblem of the Bank of Russia [the two-headed eagle with wings down, lower — the semicircular inscription — «БАНК РОССИИ» (BANK OF RUSSIA)] framed by a circle of dots and inscriptions along the rim: at the top — «ДВА РУБЛЯ» (TWO RUBLES), at the bottom — the year of issue «2001», the letters to the left indicate the metal sign and the fineness, to the right — the fine metal content and the mint trade mark.

Reverse

to the left — a portrait of V.I. Dal, lover — a goose-quill, to the right — an opened book with an inscription in five lines on it: «ТОЛКОВЫЙ СЛОВАРЬ ЖИВОГО ВЕЛИКОРУССКОГО ЯЗЫКА» (THE EXPLANATORY DICTIONARY OF THE LIVING GREAT RUSSIAN LANGUAGE), lower — a picture featuring three small figures: a balalaika player and two folk dancers, an the bottom — a manuscript with the facsimile signature of the lexicographer and the dates in two lines «1801» «1872».

Vladimir Ivanovich Dal (b. November 10 [November 22 New Style] 1801 — d. September 22 [October 4 New Style] 1872) — Russian writer, lexicographer, ethnographer, corresponding Member of Petersburg Academy of Sciences. He created «The Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language» and the collecting book «Proverbs of Russian People» as well.
