Nizhny Novgorod was awarded the honorary title City of Labour Valour for the great contribution of its residents to the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, uninterrupted manufacture of military and civilian products at industrial enterprises and people’s labour heroism and commitment.

Nizhny Novgorod supplied 43% of submarines, one in three aircraft and one in three tanks to the front line.

During the Great Patriotic War, workers of the Krasnoye Sormovo Plant accomplished a real labour feat. In 1941, the Plant tackled an extremely challenging task: it reorganised the production and started making T-34 tanks and ammunition. Overall, Sormovo built over 13,500 tanks over the four years of the war (approximately the same number of tanks were built by Germany in general over the war period), manufactured three million Katyusha rockets and artillery projectiles, built and supplied 27 diesel submarines to the Navy. Moreover, despite a severe staff shortage, the Krasnoye Sormovo Plant expanded its output 5.5 times and increased labour productivity 4 times. The high patriotism and excellence of the Sormovo workers, combined with the engineers’ and designers’ talents helped the country gain the victory in the most terrible war.
