The City of Rostov
Obverse
on the disc – the Emblem of the Bank of Russia [the two-headed eagle with wings down, lower – the semicircular inscription – «БАНК РОССИИ» (BANK OF RUSSIA)] framed by a circle of dots, the lettersto the left indicate the metal sign and the fineness, tothe right – the fine metal content. The inscriptionson the ring along the rim: at the top – «ПЯТЬ РУБЛЕЙ» (FIVE RUBLES), at the bottom – the year of issue «2004», the letters the left indicatethe metal sign and the fineness, to the right – the fine metal content and the mint trade mark.
Reverse
in the centre of the disc – a fragment of the fortress wall with the tower of the Rostov Kremlin (XVIIth century), to the left – the Church of the Virgin Odygitriya (built in 1698), to the right – the Church of St. John the Theologian (built in 1683). The inscription at the bottom on the ring along the rim – «РОСТОВ» (ROSTOV).

The city of Rostov situated on the bank of the Nero Lake was first mentioned dated back from the year of 862. It is the mostancient city of the Golden Ring of Russia.
