Yekaterinburg is the fourth largest city in Russia in terms of the size of the population. It is the administrative centre of the Sverdlovsk Region and the Urals Federal District. The city was named after Russia’s Empress Catherine I (or Yekaterina I in Russian).
The history of the city started in 1723 since the launch of the Yekaterinburg Ironworks built on the Iset River. The location for the state ironworks was chosen by Vasily Tatishchev, and the construction was completed under the guidance of Georg Wilhelm de Gennin.
Since the date of its establishment, Yekaterinburg has always been the centre of industrial production and machine building. Today, the industrial sector remains one of the most important ones in the city’s economy.
