The Karachay-Cherkess Autonomous Region was established on 12 January 1922. By the law of the RSFSR, dated 3 July 1991, the region was transformed into the Karachay-Cherkess Soviet Socialist Republic as part of the RSFSR. In December 1992, it was renamed into the Karachay-Cherkess Republic.

The republic is located in the foothills of the North-Western Caucasus. Its administrative centre is the city of Cherkessk.

Most of the territory of the republic is occupied by mountains (about 80%). Mount Elbrus, the highest peak of the Caucasus, is situated on the border with Kabardino-Balkaria.

The republic is rich in water resources. There are about 130 high mountain lakes of glacial origin and many mountain waterfalls. Waters of 172 small and large rivers flow through the republic’s territory. The republic has built and operates the system of the Big Stavropol Canal, which is a source of water supply for the Stavropol Territory.

There are large reserves of medicinal mineral waters, such as Narzan, and thermal springs.
