Obverse

the two-headed eagle designed by artist I. Bilibin. The inscriptions along the rim: at the top — "ДВА РУБЛЯ 1996 г." (TWO RUBLES 1996), at the bottom — "БАНК РОССИИ" (BANK OF RUSSIA). The letters below indicate the metal sign, the fineness, the mint trademark and the fine metal content.

Reverse

the portrait of Nikolai Nekrasov, to the left - two dates in two lines "1821" and "1878", to the right - a view of the Karabikha estate near Yaroslavl, below - a boy holding by the bridle a horse harnessed to a cart, at the bottom - the poet's facsimile signature, an opened book and a goose quill.

Nikolai Alexeyewich Nekrasov (1821-1878) - a Russian poet, prose writer and critic. He was editor and publisher of the magazines "Sovremennik" (1847-1866) and "Otechestvennye Zapiski" (1868-1878). His long poems "The Hawkers", "Father Frost, the Red Nose", "Russian Women" and "For Whom Living Is Good in Russia" and shorter verses draw a colourful picture of everyday life of the Russian people.
