Printed on white paper, the note is 157mm long and 69mm wide. The paper is impregnated with light green and red fibres and fibres with alternating red and yellow sectors. The predominant colour of the note is blue-green. The paper has local watermarks in the left- and right-hand coupon margins. The watermark in the wide coupon margin represents the head of the monument to Prince Yaroslav the Wise in the city of Yaroslavl and the watermark in the narrow coupon margin represents the figure 1 000. The note has a vertical security thread inside the paper, which can be seen when the note is put to light. The thread bears the recurrent legend ÖÁÐ 1000 (the Russian abbreviation for the Central Bank of Russia and the note's denomination), alternately direct and inverted, printed with black ink.

On the face of the note is the emblem of the Bank of Russia, located in the upper part of the note and printed with ink whose colour is changing from yellow-green to red-brown when the note is viewed at different angles. There is also the figure 1000, the embossed legend ÁÈËÅÒ ÁÀÍÊÀ ÐÎÑÑÈÈ (Bank of Russia Note) printed with dark blue ink and the coat of arms of the city of Yaroslavl printed with silver ink.

In the centre is an engraved picture of the monument to Prince Yaroslav the Wise in the city of Yaroslavl, printed with dark blue ink, and in the background is a memorial chapel and the Yaroslavl kremlin.

In the lower part of the note is the figure 1000 printed with silver ink, the legend translating as "Counterfeiting Bank of Russia notes is a prosecutable offence", special signs for people with poor sight, a patterned rosette with a decorative ribbon below it, bearing the legend Yaroslavl, a stylised band and the legend TÛÑß×À ÐÓÁËÅÉ (One Thousand rubles), printed with blue-green ink. Under slanting light the ribbon reveals two letters, PP (the Kipp effect). Left of centre is a vertical multicoloured decorative strip.

In the lower part of the right-hand coupon margin is a grey patterned rosette with the note's denomination 1000 in the left- and right-hand sectors and the figure 1000 printed with blue ink in the centre. In the centre of the left-hand narrow coupon margin are the note's serial and ordinal numbers printed with red ink and in the upper part of the right-hand wide coupon margin are the note's serial and ordinal numbers printed with dark green ink. The serial number is comprised of two letters and the ordinal number has seven digits.

On the back of the note, on the left and right sides of its upper part, is the figure 1000 inside decorative rosettes with bands between them, bearing the recurrent microprinted digits 1000 printed with blue ink. In the centre is an engraved picture of the Church of the Precursor in Yaroslavl.

In the lower part is the large figure 1000, the note's denomination written out in words, TÛÑß×À ÐÓÁËÅÉ (One Thousand rubles), seven horizontal lines with the recurrent microprinted legend ÖÁÐ 1000, whose negative writing gradually turns positive, and the figure 1997 denoting the year of issue, printed with light blue ink.

Right of centre is the figure 1000 repeated a multitude of times and a vertical decorative strip whose untinctured elements are filled with the colour of the corresponding elements of the decorative strip on the face of the note when it is put to light.

From January 1, 2001, this note will be legal tender of the Russian Federation, which must be accepted at its face value in all kind of payments without any restrictions.
