The modified banknote has the same dimensions and general design as the 1000-ruble banknote of 1997. The banknote colour design has been changed insignificantly. On the front of the modified banknote in the lower part of the unprinted area to the left of the main image there is a text “МОДИФИКАЦИЯ 2004 Г” (2004 modification).

The modified banknotes have the following main differences:

  • the security fibres of four types are embedded in the paper (red, light-green, two-coloured and grey);
  • the metallic window thread is embedded in the paper. It comes out on the surface on the back of the banknote in the shape of a window;
  • the coat-of-arms of the city of Yaroslavl is printed in optically variable ink (OVI);
  • the emblem of the Bank of Russia is printed in green ink and has a raised relief;
  • there is a vertically located numerical value of denomination executed by perforation;
  • on the front of the banknote there is a field with latent coloured waves (MVC effect) - moiré variable color (MVC);
  • on the front the numerical value of denomination is printed in grey non-metallic ink;
  • оn the back the vertical multicoloured ornamental stripe has undergone some changes;
  • images of the banknote under an ultra-violet and infra-red light have differences from the banknote of 1997.

  • Multitone watermark

    The paper has local watermarks on the left and right coupon fields. In the wide coupon field there is a fragment of the monument to Yaroslav the Wise and in the narrow coupon filed there is a numeric value of the denomination (value numeral 1000). When the banknote is held up to the light you can see various parts of the watermarks, some of which are lighter while others are darker than the surrounding paper.

  • Microperforation

    When the banknote is held up to the source of light, one can view the note denomination “1000” formed by absolutely straight parallel rows of holes perforated in the paper. The area of a banknote with the holes does not feel rough to the touch.

  • Micropattern

    On the reverse side of the banknote there are images consisting of fine lines that look like an even background for a naked eye. Copying these images causes their possible distortion or appearance of inappropriate light or dark images (moire effect).

Security features checked by tilting a banknote

front side

  • Latent multicoloured waves (moire variable colour (MVC))

    When a banknote is viewed at the right angle the area looks one-coloured. When the banknote is tilted you can see multicoloured stripes on that area.

  • Optically variable ink (OVI)

    The coat-of-arms of the city of Yaroslavl is printed with OVI ink. When the banknote is tilted, the coat-of-arms changes colour from purple to olive green.

  • Latent image of the letters „РР”
    (kipp-effect)

    When a banknote is viewed at an acute angle, letters „РР” become visible on the decorative stripe. The letters become either light on a dark background or dark on a light background depending on the orientation of the banknote.
